Modern Calligraphy - Beginners' Workshops 2024

We are now offering Modern Calligraphy workshops, whereupon you can indulge in a few hours of stress free mindfulness and perhaps learn a new skill along the way. The workshop is geared for beginners who wish to learn the basic skills and nurture their calligraphic talents.

All workshops are taken by Hannah Gibbons (Andrew's daughter, owner of Penfax) - who is a time served calligrapher with many years experience.  Hannah lives in York and runs her own calligraphy business. For further information about Hannah, please go to www.hanmadecalligraphy.com

The workshops comprise of warm-up drills initially using pencils and then moving onto the Nikko G (general) dip pen nib whereupon you will learn all the basic strokes which are used to form the letters and eventually words and sentences.  The workshops run for 2 hours and are broken down into various development stages finishing with your 'special piece' which is your chosen word or phrase.  

Equipment:  All tools will be supplied which are yours to keep and take home with you. Tools include 1 x Nikko (or similar) G nib; 1 x wooden nib holder and 1 x bottle of calligraphy ink. All training notes and practice paper is also provided.

Tip: Calligraphic letters are formed using single strokes of the nib which when put together form the letter in a stylish format.  Calligraphy is the Greek word for beautiful writing. 

Time: workshops are held on Saturday mornings from 10:30 - 12:30.  Please arrive at 10:15 to check in.

Venues:  Workshops are held at Hexham, Northumberland and York, North Yorkshire - please see dates available.   Hexham workshops are held at  The Vault, Hexham and York tbc.  Occasionally other venues are used. 

Must be aged +10 years
